At E3, Sony introduced the world to the augmented reality interface for the Playstation 3 known as the Wonderbook. At the Sony Playstation holiday preview event at Palais Royale, the Wonderbook had its own living room display ? front and centre in the middle of the ballroom ? and Harry Potter?s Book of Spells was the order of the day.
The Wonderbook
The book, classified as hardware, is actually a physical book. This took me by surprise, as I was actually expecting something made out of plastic. The twelve-page hardcover is sturdy, light, and each page has its own AR code. The Playstation 3 uses the Playstation Eye to read the codes, allowing the console show the user on the screen and to project images onto the book?s pages on-screen.
Constructs projected onto the Wonderbook image may be manipulated in real time by using the book: rotated (horizontally) or tilted (as long as the Eye can see the pages, all is good).
A construct projected onto the image of the Wonderbook.
The whole setup is definitely dependent on keeping the light levels in the room constant ? which isn?t normally a problem in your typical living room. Even though there were some challenges with the Wonderbook at Palais Royale (due to shifting lighting and the consequent shadows playing across the playing area), the Wonderbook did rather well, and is, thusfar, one of the best uses of AR I have seen (in terms of consistency).
The Wonderbook his shelves in November, and costs around $40 just for the book itself.
Book of Spells
The Harry Potter franchise seems to be doing well. Last week, I wrote about Harry Potter Kinect, which allows the player to be a student at Hogwart?s. Book of Spells takes a slightly different -almost academic- look at the Harry Potter universe by acting as a companion piece and allowing the player to delve into the history of the Wizarding and Witching school*.
The idea of the game is that the Book of Spells was actually written by Miranda Goshawk, over 200 years before Harry Potter even attended Hogwarts. When you learn the enclosed spells successfully, you gain access to stories within the book; you also gain house points.
One of the interactive lessons within the Book of Spells.
The Playstation Move Wand is used as an actual wand, appearing as such on the screen and allowing the player to cast the spells using instructions from the Book of Spells (Wonderbook). Spells can be used to interact with objects and creatures on the screen.
Book of Spells will be launching later this year and will introduce the Wonderbook to audiences in a fantastic way ? through the magic of bundling! The fact that J.K. Rowling is actually directly tied to this project makes it all the more magical!
