Stop ... India sends its last telegram

NEW DELHI (AP) ? India's last telegram went out late Sunday, marking the end of a service that millions of Indians had relied on for fast communication for more than 160 years.

Hundreds of people thronged the 75 telegraph offices remaining in the country to send their last telegrams to friends or family as a keepsake.

The company canceled holidays for staff at the offices to handle the rush, Shameem Akhtar, general manager at the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., which runs India's telegram service, said Monday.

The company says declining revenues forced it to end the service, which had become obsolete in an age of email, reliable landlines and ubiquitous cellphones.

Some of the last-day users sent telegrams to Kapil Sibal, India's minister for telecommunications, pleading for the service to be continued.

"The losses were mounting. It was not viable to have kept it going much longer," Akhtar said. That was especially true as the number of cellphone users exploded, with 867 million subscribers as of April.

The telecommunications ministry said it lost $250 million in the last seven years and that it was time to put an end to the service.

India's telegram service began in 1850, when the first telegram was sent from the eastern city of Kolkata to Diamond Harbor, a southern suburb nearly 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city center.

Over the next few decades, telegraph offices proliferated, wiring the vast subcontinent with a network that became known for its speed and dependability.

At its peak in the mid-1980s, more than 45,000 telegraph offices dotted the country, with tens of thousands of telegraph workers and delivery men dispatching more than 600,000 telegrams a day. From birth and death announcements, to college admissions, job appointments and court summons, the telegram was the main way tens of millions of Indians __ in the remotest parts of the country and in its teeming cities __ received important news.

Until recently, the government used telegrams to inform recipients of top civilian awards and for court notices. India's armed forces even recognized telegrams from troops extending vacations or from soldiers' families requesting their presence at home for a funeral.

It was not immediately known what mode of communication the government will choose to replace the telegram for these types of announcements, but officials said since a lot of work was now done electronically, government departments will likely opt for email.

Researchers hack Verizon device, turn it into mobile spy station

By Jim Finkle

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two security experts said they have figured out how to spy on Verizon Wireless mobile phone customers by hacking into devices the U.S. carrier sells to boost wireless signals indoors.

The finding, which the experts demonstrated to Reuters and will further detail at two hacking conferences this summer, comes at a time of intense global debate about electronic privacy, after top-secret U.S. surveillance programs were leaked by a former National Security Agency contractor, Edward Snowden, last month.

"This is not about how the NSA would attack ordinary people. This is about how ordinary people would attack ordinary people," said Tom Ritter, a senior consultant with the security firm iSEC Partners.

Verizon said it has updated the software on its signal-boosting devices, known as femtocells or network extenders, to prevent hackers from copying the technique of the two experts.

But Ritter said motivated hackers can still find other ways to hack the femtocells of Verizon, as well as those offered by some 30 carriers worldwide to their customers.

Femtocells, which act as tiny cellphone towers, can be purchased directly from Verizon for $250. Used models can be obtained online for about $150.

Ritter and his colleague, Doug DePerry, demonstrated for Reuters how they can eavesdrop on text messages, photos and phone calls made with an Android phone and an iPhone by using a Verizon femtocell that they had previously hacked.

They declined to disclose how they had modified the software on the device, saying they do not want to make it any easier for criminals to figure out similar ways to hack femtocells.

The two said they plan to give more elaborate demonstrations two weeks from now at the Black Hat and Def Con hacking conferences in Las Vegas. More than 15,000 security professionals and hackers are expected to attend those conferences, which feature talks on newly found bugs in communications systems, smart TVs, mobile devices and computers that run facilities from factories to oil rigs.

Verizon Wireless released a Linux software update in March that prevents its network extenders from being compromised in the manner reported by Ritter and DePerry, according to company spokesman David Samberg.

"The Verizon Wireless Network Extender remains a very secure and effective solution for our customers," Samberg said in a statement. He said there have been no reports of customers being impacted by the bug that the researchers had identified. The company is a joint venture between Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.

Samberg said his company uses an internal security team as well as outside firms to look for vulnerabilities in the devices it sells, before and after they are released.

Still, the two researchers said they are able to use the hacked femtocell to spy on Verizon phones even after Verizon released that update because they had modified the device before the company pushed out the software fix.

The researchers built their "proof of concept" system that they will demonstrate in Las Vegas with femtocells manufactured by Samsung Electronics Co and a $50 antenna from Wilson Electronics Inc.

They said that with a little more work, they could have weaponized it for stealth attacks by packaging all equipment needed for a surveillance operation into a backpack that could be dropped near a target they wanted to monitor.

For example, a group interested in potential mergers might place such a backpack in Manhattan restaurants frequented by investment bankers. Verizon's website said the device has a 40-foot range, but the researchers believe that could be expanded by adding specialized antennas.

The iSEC researchers are not the first to warn of vulnerabilities in femtocells, but claim to be the first to hack the femtocells of a U.S. carrier and also the first running on a wireless standard known as CDMA.

Other hacking experts have previously uncovered security bugs in femtocells used by carriers in Europe.

CTIA, a wireless industry group based in Washington, in February released a report that identified femtocells as a potential point of attack.

John Marinho, CTIA's vice president for cyber security and Technology, said that the group is more concerned about other potential cyber threats, such as malicious apps. He is not aware of any case where attacks were launched via femtocells.

Still, he said, the industry is monitoring the issue: "Threats change every day."

'India ready for bilateral investment treaty talks with US'

India is ready for talks with the US on a bilateral investment treaty (BIT), which would reinvigorate trade ties between the two countries, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma has said.

Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharm"We have said that 'yes, we are ready for it (Bilateral investment treaty). We are in favour of a bilateral investment agreement," Sharma told reporters at the conclusion of the Washington-leg of his US tour.

However, no date has yet been set in this regard, he said.

During his visit, Sharma had met the US Trade Representatives Mike Froman; delivered key note address to the US India Business Council (USIBC) and attended a meeting of the US India CEOs Forum.

"We have given our acceptance," Sharma said in response to a question during the press interaction.

"We would definitely be in favour of enhancing our economic partnership," he said.

"We clearly recognise that the economic engagement in both trade and investment, though robust, is well below the potential, given the opportunities that a growing economy like India offers and the opportunities that exists in the largest economy of the United States of America," he said.

Sharma said the target of $500 billion in bilateral trade by 2020 is doable.

"If we make real effort in five years, we can definitely by 2020 reach there," he said.

"As of now trade and services put together is about $106 billion and fairly balanced and it has the potential to multiply at least four fold," the Commerce Minister said.

"We have a road map and we have a structured format of our engagement," he said, adding that this visit of his, along with that of the Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and the Deputy Commissioner of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, along with other officials has reinvigorated the dialogue between the two countries.

"There was lot of positivity in our exchange and that gives us enough optimism that we will both be taking the desired steps and measure to ensure this partnership not only remains robust but also they are consolidated," he said.

Responding to questions, Sharma said he and Chidambaram have raised India's concerns with regard to the immigration bill in their meetings with their counterparts, and also at the India-US CEOs Forum.

"It is the USIBC which first raised it saying professionals working in these companies are providing a range of service and bringing much values to the businesses and it would affect both the companies, not only the Indian IT companies, but also US companies," he said.

"When it comes to professionals, these are individuals who are providing highly specialised services to help the businesses be competitive and also move up the value chain.

They cannot be categorised as immigrants," he said, adding that the Indian side raised its concerns.

"I hope that they have heard us and this will not happen. At least the legitimate concerns would get addressed. When professionals come for a short period of time as per the visa it would be unfair and not correct to categorise them as immigrants," Sharma said.

He hoped these concerns would get addressed when the final version of the immigration bill comes out.

The India US trade policy forum meeting would be held later this year in New Delhi, said Sharma, adding the dates were being worked out.

On reforms, Sharma said the Indian Government has taken a series of steps with regard to economic reforms including the Cabinet decision to raise the FDI in insurance sector to 49 per cent.

He said the government has also initiated reforms in the banking sector.

Responding to a question on India's low ranking of doing business," Sharma said: "Even if it is a perception, we are doing everything possible to correct that. And one of the major steps has been the National Manufacturing Policy which effectively addresses the concerns when it comes to the ease of doing business and mandatory approvals".

The National Manufacturing Policy, proposes to raise the share of manufacturing in our GDP from below 16 per cent to at least 25 per cent within a decade, creating 100 million skilled jobs.

The principle instrument is the national manufacturing and investment zones which would be stand-alone integrated industrial townships, he said.

"India will eventually become the manufacturing capital of the world," Sharma said.

India, he said, has put across to the US its view point with "clarity and sincerity" over the issues raised by the US businesses and lawmakers.

India is far more welcoming of US business than the current perception, he said, adding the government is working to address this perception.

"For the legislative reforms, we have had an unfortunate situation for quite a while, like partisan politics at its worst.

"And the principle opposition party instead of debating or discussing the issues that could be done in healthy or mature democracy, has prevented Parliament from debating any issue, from passing legislation..., he said.

The two countries, he said, have agreed to work together to ensure that the December meeting of the World Trade Organisation in Bali is a success.

"We have agreed to put together a work programme. Our chief negotiators and senior officials in Geneva will meet to discuss, so there is a broad consensus around the key issues of trade facilitation and food security," he said.

"We are for a healthy, positive and balanced outcome. We will work very closely with all our partners to ensure that the outcome is a positive one," he added.

Meanwhile, an official release issued in New Delhi said Sharma met US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker yesterday in Washington and conveyed his concerns over problems in free movement of Indian IT professionals.

"...the movement of highly trained professionals delivering technology services should not be mistaken with the immigrants.

"He shared the concerns of Indian IT industry with regard to inclusion of restrictive provisions on mobility of skilled professionals in the US Immigration legislation currently under consideration in the US Congress," it said.

Sharma said huge opportunities are there for the US businesses in the proposed National Investment and Manufacturing Zones. India has approved setting up of 13 such zones.

NMIZs will be mega industrial zones with world class supporting infrastructure. The government is offering a host of incentives and a liberalised labour and environment norms to promote these zones.

Both the sides agreed to maintain a high level of communication and strengthen functional dialogue mechanisms between the officials.

It said Sharma also met President and CEO of Walmart Asia Scott Price to discuss issues related to multi-brand retail trading.

He also met Amazon.com's Vice President for Global Public Policy Paul Misener to discuss issues pertaining to e-commerce.

Can Football Make Hummus Macho?

By Haaretz/Alison Kaplan Sommer

Some sports and food groups in the United States are easily associated with one another. Baseball and hot dogs clearly go together, for example. That?s easy.

But what about football? Tailgating parties, where people hold picnics out of the back of the car before a big game, may be an integral part of the football ritual in the United States (we?re talking about American football, of course) but one wouldn?t say that there is a specific dish that one immediately thinks of as official football food.

But let?s try to imagine such a thing for a moment. You?ve packed up the car, you pull out the picnic cooler to start laying out the pre-football-game spread, and you reach your hand inside and pull out a big container of all-American ? hummus?

Sounds bizarre and jarring, but it?s now official. The National Football League has signed a deal with Sabra Dipping Co. that will make Sabra brand hummus the ?official dip? of the league.

Suppliers Indicate iPad 5 sooner, Mini Retina later

ipad 5 and ipad mini 2

When it comes to staying on a deadline, Apple seems to have some sort of a problem keeping up with that. Of course, you would have to have a deadline in order to keep to one. We all have our thoughts, through recent release history, as to when Apple will release its next generation of their devices. Usually it is during the spring and fall months. Recently, rumors suggest that some of these highly anticipated "next generation" devices might not make it on time.

This is the state of affairs as far as the iPad number 5 and the iPad Mini are concerned. It seems, from recent reports and chatter from suppliers, that the next 9.7 inch iPad is right on track for a September release. The Mini, on the other hand, with a Retina display, is a different story.

UNIEA Beach Pouch - HatThe good news is that the iPad 5 is to have a smaller bezel like the Mini's and an overall thinner design, due to the use of a redesigned backlight apparatus. This will not only make the screen a little bigger, but will help with those late night reading sessions when the device bonks you on the nose as you drift to sleep.

The iPad Mini, the 7.9 inch wonder kid of the Apple line up, is probably going to be later in the year. Digitimes claimed Mondaythat Apple has not even decided whether to go Retina but, if it does, there is a chance of a product "release" in the fourth quarter sometime.

I am not sure which would be better at this point. Wait for a Retina display Mini or go with a new generation that is lighter and faster. My initial reaction is to wait. On one hand I use my Mini much more than my normal sized iPad. It goes with me everywhere I go and I enjoy the smaller form. So, a lighter, faster iPad Mini would be perfect. On the other hand Retina display would be nice too. In the end I think waiting is ok for me. I won't have to buy two more to get Retina display and when it does come out I'll be able to have a lighter, faster Mini with Retina.

For me, its ok that Apple delays to make sure it has Retina. That doesn't mean it is any easier waiting.

Open champion Ernie Els admits he almost quit golf in frustration over his pitiful putting

Ernie Els of South Africa kisses the Claret Jug after winning the 141st Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club
Something Els: The joy of Open victory for Ernie at Royal Lytham last summer

?

Ernie Els has revealed the agony before the ecstasy of his Open Championship triumph last year ? and admitted he nearly quit golf over his putting woes.

Along with his four Major titles, the Big Easy has built a business empire worth over ?100million and owns homes in Florida, his native South Africa and England, along with an enviable, globetrotting lifestyle.

But ahead of next week's 142nd Open Championship at Muirfield in Scotland, Els, 43, said he has suffered ?brutal? times during his long career.

And this 6ft 3in colossus of a man claimed the public did not appreciate the hurt, pain and sacrifices required to stay at the top of the sport for so long.

?It?s a crazy game,? said the 43-year-old, who has missed the cut at this week's Scottish Open warm-up event. ?My daughter (Sam) wants to go into tennis and I tell her, ?No, you don?t want to go into professional sport.?

?Don?t get me wrong, it?s wonderful in many ways. If I wasn?t a golfer, I would probably be mowing the lawn at Wentworth, but it?s such a sacrifice for the family. I?ve been living outside South Africa more than half my life.

?Even if the rewards are unbelievable, it?s hard to explain to the man in the street that you have to work at it.

?The disappointments are brutal because it?s in the public eye. I?ve been exposed to this with my problems on the greens. If you play it as long as I have, if you?re not touched by every single aspect of the sport, you?re a very lucky man.

?I?ve been touched by most of it, mentally, physically, in front of millions of people. It has been a hell of a ride. If you?re writing a book, don?t write it at 25. Write it at 45.?

Els was haunted by Tiger Woods at the peak of his career, and lost the 2004 Open Championship in a play-off to unknown Todd Hamilton.

And then the loss of his putting touch.

Speaking with searing honesty, he said the soul-searching and despair hit hardest behind the scenes.

?That?s why so many give it up, why there are so many analysts out there,? he explained. ?They have all played the game, they all reached a point where they just said, ?Screw it?.

?Mentally and physically, just the despair of it can get to you and you turn to something else.

?I did get close to saying ?Screw it? with my putting. There?s nothing like going through agony on the greens. So many great players stopped playing because of putting: Peter Alliss, Johnny Miller, Ben Hogan almost stopped. it definitely fluttered through my eardrums.

?Anchored putting has prolonged a lot of careers.?

Plagued by problems on the green, Els missed the cut in three Majors in 2011 and then dropped out the world?s top 50 for the first time since 1993 to miss the Masters last year.

As a long opponent of the belly putter, he took the huge decision to use a technique he called ?legalised cheating?.

His wife Leizl, sitting at a nearby table in the Wentworth clubhouse, explained: ?People don?t realise the agony he went through before going to the long putter.

?People think it was an automatic thing for him to do but it was anything but that. It should have told everyone how badly he was suffering, and how close he got to packing up, because he never wanted to use that putter.

?It was, absolutely, a last resort. It showed how much he loved the game, that he wasn?t ready to give it up.?

Els added: ?It looks like I will be lucky and that it will be time that will stop me, because I have gone through my little battle.?

The South African, who owns a wine company back home, also gave up the booze before Royal Lytham last year but fell ?right off the wagon? celebrating his second Claret Jug.

He admitted he struggled for motivation at the start of this season but he refound his winning touch at the BMW International Open in Munich.

The double US Open winner still wants a career Grand Slam ? ?the Masters would be unbelievable? ? but completing a hat-trick of Opens is his immediate priority.

And if not him, another golden oldie.

?People like Darren (Clarke) and myself use our experience,? he said. ?You need to know how to manoeuvre yourself through the links and I can see it carrying on. Tom Watson almost won it at 59 and Greg Norman was right there one year.

?If you?re on your game, it?s unbelievable how the Open crowd can lift you. That?s what happened to me, I could just feel the crowd over the back nine willing me to do it, whispering: ?Come on?.

?And so I can see these beautiful stories continuing. I am going back to Muirfield for my third time ? some of the field weren?t born the first time I played there (1992).

?Sir Nick Faldo is playing, perhaps even he could do something. You never know. I was 80-1. He will be 1,000-1 so I might have a pound on him. Let?s see, maybe we can push the envelope here and see a Major winner over the age of 50.?

* ERNIE ELS believes Muirfield?s all-male membership policy is ?weird?.

Scotland?s First Minister Alex Salmond is boycotting the Open because the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers refuses to allow female members.

And Els, who won the Open the last time it was staged in East Lothian in 2002, said: ?It is going to be an issue.

?I am not a member there although I am a member at a lot of clubs around the world. I like to think they?re all open ? it?s weird, isn?t it?

?We?ve got presidents, prime ministers who are women, it?s weird. Should the Open be there? I will play wherever, that?s what I do. It?s sport.

?All I can say is that it is weird in this day and age but it is what it is.

?We are sportsmen. If you put a hole down on the M25 we?d go and play. You guys judge, other people judge, we go play. But it is weird.?

When announcing his boycott, SNP leader Salmond said: ?I just think that it is indefensible in the 21st century not to have a golf club that is open to all.

?To have the message that women are not welcome as members, can?t be members and can?t have playing rights over the course on the same basis as men seems to send out entirely the wrong message about the future of golf.?
