Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act Extended to January 1, 2014!

Tuesday, January 29

?As we inched closer to the end of 2012, many taxpayers anxiously awaited the decision from Congress on the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, recently referred to as the??Fiscal Cliff??bill.?? An important part of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 included the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act that was implemented in 2007 in response to the housing crises.? This Act provided tax relief for homeowners who were granted mortgage debt forgiveness because of a loan modification, short sale or foreclosure on their primary residence.

The Act was due to expire on January 1, 2013; however, Congress did come through and passed a one-year extension.? Therefore, many homeowners and real estate professionals were able to breathe a little easier and sleep a little better knowing the Act was extended through January 1, 2014.? Had the Act not been extended, hundreds of thousands of struggling homeowners currently in a workout solution would have been further crippled by a large tax liability.? The extension of this act ensures homeowners who receive principal reductions from loan modifications or other forms of debt forgiveness through a short sale or foreclosure on their primary residence will not have to pay taxes on the amount forgiven.? Under this Act, up to $2 million in debt elimination can be tax-free, but the debt forgiveness must be on the homeowner?s qualified principal residence.

Typically, when a lender forgives a debt, the amount forgiven is considered taxable income.?? For example, if you owe a debt to someone and that person cancels or forgives that debt, the canceled amount of the debt may be taxable.? However, the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act was implemented specifically to protect homeowners from cancelled mortgage debt if the forgiven debt was on their qualified principal residence.? Only cancelled debt that was used to buy, build or improve your principal residence or refinance debt incurred for those purposes qualifies under the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act.? Second homes and investment properties are not included in this act.

The National Association of Realtors (NAR) worked long and hard over the past several months urging their Realtor members to ask lawmakers to extend this Act for another year.? The NAR stated that ?more than a quarter of all real estate transactions today involve distressed properties and these homeowners should not be forced to pay a tax on money they have already lost with cash they never received.??? Their hard work paid off!

Without the protection of the Mortgage Debt Relief Act, there is no motivation for homeowners to consider an alternative workout solution.? This would leave many homeowners to choose to walk away from their homes, which would force banks to foreclosure.? The housing crisis is just beginning to recover.? Had the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act not been extended, it surely would have been detrimental to the housing recovery.

Revolutionary cooling system uses lasers

Jan. 30, 2013 ? With the latest discovery by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), current cooling systems which uses refrigerant harmful to the ozone layer could be replaced by a revolutionary cooling system using lasers.

This discovery, published and featured on the cover of the 24 January 2013 issue of Nature, could also potentially lead to a host of other innovations. This includes making huge Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, unwieldy night vision goggles and satellite cameras -- all of which require extreme cooling systems -- even more compact and energy saving.

This breakthrough in laser cooling technology can even lead to the development of almost sci-fi like computer chips that cool on their own, minimising heat and thus prolonging battery life for portable devices like tablets and smart phones.

Assistant Professor Xiong Qihua from the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering had cooled down a semiconductor from 20 degrees Celsius down to minus 20 degrees Celsius. Before this, the cooling of semiconductors by laser has never been proven.

The material, Cadmium Sulfide, is a type of group II-VI semiconductor commonly used in solar cells, sensors and electronics.

"If we are able to harness the power of laser cooling, it would mean that medical devices which require extreme cooling, such as MRI which uses liquid helium, could do away with their bulky refrigerant systems with just with an optical refrigeration device in its place," Prof Xiong said.

"Not only that, but it would also remove the need for compressors and coolants in air-conditioning and refrigerators used in our homes and automobiles, saving space, energy and green house gases which are harmful to our ozone layer.

The potential for a compact, cost-effective, vibration-free and cryogen-less cooling system is enormous, as the global market for energy-efficient buildings is estimated to be worth over $100 billion dollars by 2017, according to reports by Global Industry Analysts (GIA).

"This also translates into the ability to build miniaturised coolers to cool infrared sensors used in satellites for imaging and build self-cooling computer chips suitable for use in portable devices like tablets and smart phones."

Prof Xiong, who leads a research team of 25 people including three undergraduates, is now looking to bring laser cooling down to liquid helium temperature at minus 269 degree Celsius. This is because in principle and theory, semiconductors can support laser cooling down to such a low temperatures.

"Our initial results published in Nature, have shown that it is possible to laser-cool a semiconductor to liquid nitrogen temperature, so we are aiming to reach an even lower temperature, such as that of liquid helium," said Prof Xiong, who had directed the research efforts of his researchers Dr. Zhang Jun and Ph.D. student Li Dehui towards this new area.

This experiment which took three years to complete was funded by NTU, Prof Xiong's National Research Foundation Fellowship grant and the Ministry of Education Academic Research Fund.

NTU's ground-breaking research into fundamental physics and sciences is one of the key components in Sustainability, one of the university's Five Peaks of Excellence, areas of research which NTU hopes to make a global mark in under its five-year strategic plan.

China's Lenovo logs record quarterly profit, beats forecasts

HONG KONG (Reuters) - China's Lenovo Group Ltd, on track to become the world's top maker of personal computers, reported a record quarterly profit, up by a third from a year earlier, as it gained more share in the PC market and made inroads in the smartphone business.

The ThinkPad maker, also China's No. 2 smartphone vendor, said on Wednesday net profit in its October-December third quarter had risen to $204.9 million. That beat the average estimate of $178.4 million in a Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S poll of 11 analysts and exceeded its previous record of around $172 million in the three months ended December 2007.

Lenovo has rapidly gained market share in the PC sector on the back of acquisitions over the past few years. The company trails Hewlett Packard Co by a slim margin in PC shipments, according to technology research group IDC.

As PC demand growth slows, Lenovo has been diversifying into the mobile device sector to tap robust demand for smartphones and tablets, particularly at home in China, the world's biggest market for mobile phones and personal computers.

"In my opinion, Lenovo's strategy in mobile devices is that it will focus initially on the overseas markets that it's most familiar with and this includes emerging markets," Eve Jung, an analyst at Nomura Equity Research.

"However, it will face challenges in the sector as companies like Acer and Asustek roll out cheaper tablet PC models to aggressively target markets, such as China, which is Lenovo's traditional stronghold," she said.

In the third quarter, overall revenue grew 12 percent from a year earlier to $9.4 billion, with the bulk coming from its PC business.

About a tenth of its revenues were from its mobile internet and digital home (MIDH) business - mainly consisting of its smartphone sales in China, which jumped 77 percent to $998 million.

The company said its China smartphone business achieved profitability for the first time during the quarter.

Shares of Lenovo rose 36 percent in 2012, outpacing a 23 percent rise in the Hang Seng Index and beating rivals Hewlett Packard, Dell Inc and Acer Inc, whose stocks fell last year.

On Wednesday, Lenovo shares closed down 2.7 percent prior to the results announcement, compared with the Hang Seng's 0.7 percent rise.

'Scary': Up to 50 million home network devices vulnerable to hack

7 hrs.

BOSTON (Reuters) - Bugs in widely used networking technology expose tens of millions of personal computers, printers and storage drives to attack by hackers over the regular Internet, researchers with a security software maker said.?

The problem lies in computer routers and other networking equipment that use a commonly employed standard known as Universal Plug and Play or UPnP. UPnP makes it easy for networks to identify and communicate with equipment, reducing the amount of work it takes to set up networks.?

Security software maker Rapid7 said in a white paper to be released Tuesday that it discovered between 40 million and 50 million devices that were vulnerable to attack due to three separate sets of problems that the firm's researchers have identified with the UPnP standard.

The long list of devices includes products from manufacturers including Belkin, D-Link, Cisco's Linksys division and Netgear.?

Representatives for Belkin, D-Link, Linksys and Netgear could not be reached for comment on Monday evening.?

Chris Wysopal, chief technology officer of security software firm Veracode, said he believed that publication of Rapid7's findings would draw widespread attention to the still emerging area of UPnP security, prompting other security researchers to search for more bugs in UPnP.

"This definitely falls into the scary category," said Wysopal, who reviewed Rapid7's findings ahead of their publication. "There is going to be a lot more research on this. And the follow-on research could be a lot scarier."?

Rapid7 has privately alerted electronics makers about the problem through the CERT Coordination Center, a group at the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute that helps researchers report vulnerabilities to affected companies.?

"This is the most pervasive bug I've ever seen," said HD Moore, chief technology officer for Rapid7. He discussed the research with Reuters late on Monday.

Moore, who created a widely used platform known as Metasploit that allows security experts to simulate network attacks, said that he expected CERT to release a public warning about the flaw on Tuesday. A spokesman for the CERT Coordination Center declined to comment.?

A source with a networking equipment maker confirmed they had been alerted that CERT would issue an advisory on Tuesday and that companies were preparing to respond.?

Taking control
The flaws could allow hackers to access confidential files, steal passwords, take full control over PCs as well as remotely access devices such as webcams, printers and security systems, according to Rapid7.?

Moore said that there were bugs in most of the devices he tested and that device manufacturers will need to release software updates to remedy the problems.?

He said that is unlikely to happen quickly.?

In the meantime, he advised computer users to quickly use a free tool released by Rapid7 to identify vulnerable gear, then disable the UPnP functionality in that equipment.?

Moore said hackers have not widely exploited the UPnP vulnerabilities to launch attacks, but both Moore and Wysopal expected they may start to do so after the findings are publicized.?

Still, Moore said he decided to disclose the flaws in a bid to pressure equipment makers to fix the bugs and generally pay more attention to security.?

People who own devices with UPnP enabled may not be aware of it because new routers, printers, media servers, Web cameras, storage drives and "smart" or Web-connected TVs are often shipped with that functionality turned on by default.?

"You can't stay silent about something like this," he said. "These devices seem to have had the same level of core security for decades. Nobody seems to really care about them."?

Veracode's Wysopal said that some hackers have likely already exploited the flaws to launch attacks, but in relatively small numbers, choosing victims one at a time.?

"If they are going after executives and government officials, then they will probably look for their home networks and exploit this vulnerability," he said.?

Rapid7 is advising businesses and consumers alike to disable UPnP in devices that they suspect may be vulnerable to attack. The firm has released a tool to help identify those devices on its website.?

U.N. optimistic Syria aid meet will win major funding

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The United Nations has received promises of major donations at this week's $1.5 billion aid conference for millions of Syrians affected by nearly two years of conflict, a senior U.N. official said on Tuesday.

Wednesday's pledging conference in Kuwait will seek $1 billion of aid for Syria's neighbors sheltering 700,000 registered refugees, and another $500 million to bankroll humanitarian work for 4 million Syrians inside their country.

So far, the United Nations has received pledges covering just 18 percent of the target, unveiled last month as the scale of Syria's humanitarian crisis escalated sharply, and which aims to fund operations for the first half of this year.

"We have every reason to be optimistic that there will a very good presence and new pledges that will be coming up at this conference," said Robert Watkins, U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon, which has seen the biggest influx of refugees from the Syrian bloodshed.

"We have received preliminary pledges from a number of important donor countries that they will be making announcements of large donations."

U.S. President Barack Obama announced an additional $155 million, bringing the total U.S. humanitarian aid to the Syrian crisis to some $365 million, the State Department said.

Watkins said the fact that the conference was being held in the Gulf state of Kuwait could encourage other wealthy Gulf Arab states, who have led regional opposition to President Bashar al-Assad, to support the international aid effort.

Many Gulf states have sent assistance, but aid workers in the region say their efforts have been haphazard and rarely coordinated with other aid agencies, hampering their ability to plan a sustained relief program.

"It's important that we widen the range of donors that provide assistance," Watkins said.

OPPOSITION CRITICISM

Syria's main opposition coalition has criticized the U.N. appeal and its arrangements for distributing aid inside Syria, saying the organization has effectively ceded control to the Syrian government and failed to deliver all but a bare minimum of aid to areas controlled by Assad's opponents.

But Watkins said the Syrian government did not influence the aid distribution, although there were some areas of the country which could not be reached because of the violence.

"While we are not able to reach all of the people in need in Syria - because there are 4 million people who need assistance inside the country - we have been able to feed up to 1.5 million people," Watkins said.

"Of those 1.5 million people, 49 percent are in areas which are either under the control of the opposition or in contested areas," he said, adding that the main U.N. aid distribution partner in Syria - the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) - was "neutral and impartial".

The opposition says the top members of the SARC are close to Assad's government, and the organization cannot operate even-handedly. But activists say its workers on the ground have come under fire from both sides in the conflict.

Syria's uprising began in March 2011 as a peaceful protest movement, but rebels took up arms after the government cracked down on the demonstrations.

The rebellion has since become a full-scale civil war. Insurgents have taken swathes of rural territory from government forces but have failed to capture major cities and towns. More than 60,000 people have died, the United Nations says.

The number of refugees fleeing to neighboring countries has jumped sharply in the last two months, passing the 500,000 mark on December 11 and growing by more than 200,000 since then.

On Monday, 3,000 Syrians fled into Jordan.

"We have seen an unrelenting flow of refugees across all borders. We are running double shifts to register people," Sybella Wilkes, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told Reuters in Geneva.

Jordan has 171,033 registered Syrian refugees, as well as 51,729 who await processing, many of who fled fighting around the southern Syrian town of Deraa this month. Lebanon has 158,973 Syrian refugees, and 69,963 awaiting processing.

"We are trying to clear a backlog of people because the numbers have gone up so dramatically (in Jordan and Lebanon)," Wilkes said.

Turkey has 163,161 Syrian refugees in its 15 camps while Iraq hosts 77,415, the UNHCR said. There are 14,375 in Egypt and 5,417 registered across the rest of North Africa.

Berries may be healthful, but some health benefits of berries may not make it past your mouth

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Research has suggested that compounds that give colorful fruits their rich hues, especially berries, promote health and might even prevent cancer. But for the first time, scientists have exposed extracts from numerous berries high in those pigments to human saliva to see just what kinds of health-promoting substances are likely to survive and be produced in the mouth.

It's too early to name the best berry for health promotion based on this initial work. But the researchers have discovered that two families of pigments that provide berries with their colors, called anthocyanins, are more susceptible to degradation in the mouth than are the other four classes of these pigments.

The Ohio State University study also showed that bacteria living in the mouth are responsible for most of the breakdown of these compounds that occurs in saliva. Researchers are investigating whether it's the berry pigments themselves, or instead the products of their degradation, that actually promote health.

Scientists say that these early findings will contribute to the further development of confectionaries, gums and other delivery devices for the prevention and possibly the treatment of conditions such as periodontal disease and oral cancers.

The researchers exposed extracts of anthocyanin pigments from blueberries, chokeberries, black raspberries, red grapes and strawberries to the saliva collected from 14 people. Black raspberries, in particular, have been shown in numerous previous studies to have chemopreventive effects on tumors in the mouth, esophagus and colon, mostly in animal studies. Their high anthocyanin content has been linked to those benefits.

"All fruits are unique because their chemical composition, or fingerprint, varies," said Mark Failla, professor of human nutrition at Ohio State and interim chair of the Department of Human Sciences. "There are many different edible berries. Some might be better for providing health-promoting effects within the oral cavity, whereas others may be more beneficial for colonic health. We simply do not know at this time.

"Increased intake of fruits and vegetables is associated with decreased risk of some chronic diseases. An understanding of the metabolism of these compounds, and the relative activities of the compounds in the consumed fruit and their metabolic products, is needed to make scientifically sound dietary recommendations and to develop effective delivery vehicles for the mouth," Failla said.

The research is published in a recent issue of the journal Food Chemistry.

Failla and colleagues asked 14 healthy individuals between the ages of 21 and 55 years to collect saliva in the morning before they had eaten breakfast or brushed their teeth. Research participants later collected additional saliva samples before and after they had rinsed their mouths with an antibacterial liquid.

The five fruits selected for study allowed the scientists to test the six distinct families of the anthocyanin pigments. Researchers purified the anthocyanins from each berry type and added the extracts to saliva.

The extent of the pigment degradation in saliva was primarily a function of the chemical structure of a given anthocyanin, said Failla, also an investigator in Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center and Food Innovation Center.

Two families of anthocyanins consistently degraded when exposed to saliva: delphinidin and petunidin. Four other families were more stable: cyanidin, pelargonidin, peonidin and malvidin.

"Our observations suggest that the bacteria within one's oral cavity are a primary mediator of pigment metabolism. The bacteria are converting compounds that are present in the foods into metabolites," Failla said. "One area of great interest is whether the health-promoting benefits associated with eating anthocyanin-rich fruits like berries are provided by the pigment itself, the natural combinations of the pigments in the fruit, or the metabolites produced by bacteria in the mouth and other regions of the gastrointestinal tract."

There is context for this study that further complicates the understanding of anthocyanins' benefits. Multiple studies have led to the conclusion that anthocyanins themselves are very poorly absorbed by the body.

"If anthocyanins are the actual health-promoting compound, you would want to design food products, confectionaries and gels containing mixtures of anthocyanins that are stable in the mouth. If, on the other hand, the metabolites produced by the metabolism of anthocyanins are the actual health-promoting compounds, there will be greater interest in fruits that contain anthocyanins that are less stable in the oral cavity," Failla said. "We lack such insights at this time."

The extent to which the anthocyanins were degraded varied among the 14 people whose saliva was used in the study. However, two families of anthocyanins consistently degraded the most in all volunteers. Failla said the observed variation among individuals is likely related to differences in the microbial community that resides in each person's mouth.

This research group is continuing the work, examining which bacteria are most involved in the metabolism of anthocyanins and testing the stability of the pigments in berry juices in the mouths of human volunteers rather than in test tubes containing their saliva.

This work was supported in part by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center.

Warren Buffett made late-2012 bid for NYSE Euronext: sources

(Reuters) - Warren Buffett made a bid to acquire New York Stock Exchange operator NYSE Euronext last November, but his offer was less than one already on the table from IntercontinentalExchange Inc , two people familiar with the matter said.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said Buffett's conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway was the "Company A" bidder disclosed in a regulatory filing by ICE on Monday.

Buffett's assistant could not immediately comment on the report. NYSE Euronext declined to comment. The news was first reported by CNBC's David Faber.

ICE agreed to buy NYSE Euronext late last month for $8.2 billion following about two months of talks.

Before the deal closed, NYSE's board of directors instructed the company's bankers to pursue alternatives, according to the ICE filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Bankers from Perella Weinberg approached "Company A" on November 25, the filing said. On November 28, "Company A" presented an offer that was less than the ICE bid and was conditioned on the sale of NYSE Euronext's European derivatives business for a minimum price.

At a NYSE board meeting December 12 and 13, Perella Weinberg indicated that it was still working with "Company A" but that the bidder had not improved the offer. There was no further mention of the unnamed bidder in the filing.

Had Berkshire done the deal, it would have been somewhat small by Buffett's standards. He spent much of 2012 trying to do deals in the $20 billion range, and even said at one point that he might have to look at doing a $30 billion deal this year.

2013 Cadillac XTS Is Bristling With High Tech

A Cadillac is a huge, ostentatious land yacht, usually piloted by grandpas wearing Hawaiian shirts and lots of gold chains, right?

Not any more. It's time to change those stereotypes now that there's the 2013 Cadillac XTS, a performance sedan that's packed with the latest car tech. It's a car Gramps wouldn't even recognize as a Caddy.

[More from Mashable: ?Business Cards? Let Restaurants Know You Might Write a Review]

Let's take a look at what it's like to drive the XTS. The centerpiece of the company's in-car tech is CUE (an acronym for Cadillac User Experience). It does away with knobs, dials and switches in favor of a tablet-like touchscreen interface, with a few dashboard buttons thrown in for good measure. And yes, it lets you pinch to zoom, just like you'd do with an iPad.

As I took a seat in the XTS, I found out these aren't the cushy luxo-seats of the old Elvis-era Cadillacs. These extensively adjustable thrones are firm and sporty. They can give you a high seating position if you so choose, making the XTS sedan feel almost like an SUV. Once you get them set to your preference, the seats are exquisitely comfortable.

[More from Mashable: Nasty Client Website Lets Businesses Review Customers]

On a cold winter's day, I quickly learned where to find the seat heating control, offering three levels of blessed warmth. Another favorite feature is a heated steering wheel that gets nice and toasty warm in a few seconds. These hot features are not new by any means, but they're so welcome -- especially on those frigid days when the steering wheel feels like a frozen pump handle.

Cadillac lent us a Cadillac XTS Platinum Collection car (with a $61,305 sticker price) for a week. I was glad to see it was the all-wheel drive (AWD) version (also known as the XTS 4). That came in handy during this bitter winter, where I drove this sturdy steed through an icy Midwestern snowstorm.

Never have I felt so confident on an icy road -- perhaps overconfident -- as I did with this XTS 4. Its traction control and ABS performed admirably, keeping the car traveling in a straight line even when I slammed on the brakes or got a little too enthusiastic on the throttle.

My enthusiasm was egged on by the respectable horsepower under the XTS's hood, a 3.6-liter V6 engine that cranks out 304 hp without even breathing hard (for full specs, gearheads, please take a look here).

It's a six-speed automatic, but for extra thrills, I enjoyed placing the Cadillac into its manual mode and using the paddle shifters on the back of the steering wheel to change gears. Even though this is a large car, weighing just over 2 tons (4,215 lb), its handling was nimble and its acceleration was brisk.

But you'll pay in gas for all that oomph. With my spirited driving, on 151.3 miles of combined city and highway driving, I got an average of 17.2 mpg. Ouch.

My only complaint about its drivability is the poor visibility out the back window and sides of the car, due to the slim design of the vehicle's windows. My wife felt it was like driving a tank.

But why even look out the back window when you have a backup camera? The one included in the XTS is excellent, using clever graphics to show you exactly where your car will go, changing their trajectory as you steer. I went to an empty parking lot and tried driving backwards using just the backup camera, and after a little practice, it works beautifully. That doesn't make up for the poor visibility out the back window, but almost.

Along with that coolness, all the accoutrements you would expect from Cadillac are there. There are no keys involved -- all you need to do is possess the Cadillac key fob, and you can press a button to start it either as you sit in the car or remotely. When you open the car door, the Cadillac CUE logo floats across both the 12.3-inch instrument cluster screen in front of the steering wheel, as well as the 8-inch screen on the center stack.

After that flashy animation is done, you're left with icons that help you control the audio, weather reports, OnStar, GPS navigation, phone and Pandora. As you touch any of those items on the screen, you feel a slight vibration, giving you haptic feedback about what you just touched. However, that doesn't help the fact that this screen is simply not responsive enough.

Perhaps I've been spoiled by touchscreens on iPhones and Android and Windows phones, but this screen did not react well. Sometimes I would need to touch an item twice or three times. This is not acceptable, particularly in an environment where distraction can mean death.

The system contains several redundant icons that I don't think are necessary. For instance, there's an OnStar icon on the touchscreen, and that capability is also present in a cluster of buttons above the windshield. In addition, there are two icons on the touchscreen for climate control of the left and right seat, which are also unnecessary because of the presence of physical climate controls right there on the center console.

You can move the icons around to your liking, but there will still be the need to swipe from one screen to the next -- if there's a function you need on the next screen, it's awkward to swipe to it while driving.

An effort toward alleviating that awkwardness are Favorites, functions such as radio stations or even navigational destinations that you can program into the system. Favorites can be accessed by a cryptic icon of unlabeled chevrons on the bottom right of the interface. Why not just make it a heart, the icon that makes it little more obvious that you'll be presented with your favorites?

If you don't designate your favorite radio stations, you'll be in for a mystery tour. For instance, if you tap on the audio icon, and then tap Radio, it's hard to tell what to do next unless you're happy with the default AM radio station. It places you smack dab in the middle of the AM radio band, and the only way to get out of it is to push that radio button again to get to FM, HD radio or Sirius XM.

Once you learn it, it works, but for first-timers, it's not intuitive at all. I'd suggest creating Favorites for your stations as soon as possible.

The car's speech recognition is slightly better than I've seen in other models from GM and its competitors. Responding in a voice that sounds a bit like Apple's Siri, the system could recognize a lot of what I said to it, including unusual addresses.

Sometimes the voice is a bit slow to respond, making you wait until it's finished talking before it can take action on what you've said. Even so, it shows me that even though speech recognition in cars is not good enough to depend on 100% of the time, it's showing steady improvement. Perhaps the quiet interior environment of the Cadillac made it easier for the system to work, but it still has a way to go before it's accurate enough to use without frustration.

The car's GPS system is excellent, and can be controlled by voice, as can phone calling and radio station selection. I especially like the way GPS directions show up in the car's head-up display (HUD), graphically counting down the distance to the next turn. The display is brilliant, appearing to hover over the hood, and you can configure it to show your current speed along with GPS directions, compass direction, a tachometer or the music you're currently playing.

After a week of testing, I began to get used to the CUE system. But I'm a technology reviewer. It wasn't that hard for me. But I'm thinking about some of the people who might be sitting in front of CUE for the first time. I think they will be bewildered. And sometimes, the difficulty of using this system could be dangerous.

For example, like the Chevy Volt, the Cadillac GPS system hides "cancel route" at the bottom of an obscure menu. This means if you've changed your mind about where you're going, if you're not completely familiar with the system, you won't be able to cancel your route. Then you'll be required to listen to unnecessary GPS commands until the next road stop. It's either that or go fishing through menus (while you're driving ) to try to find out how to silence these unhelpful directions. Not good.

The most compelling technology in the XTS is its ability to interface with smartphones. The system is set up so that it uses the cellular data signal from your smartphone to access data from the Internet. So far, Pandora Radio is the only app included with the car, letting you use your Pandora account in your car just like you would with your smartphone. If you have an Android or BlackBerry phone, you're good to go.

Once I paired up my Droid 4 smartphone to CUE, I launched Pandora on the phone and it showed up on the car's screen. Suddenly, the XTS was rocking Pandora. It was letting me listen to my favorite Pandora stations, give a song a thumbs up or thumbs down, and change stations and get songs, right there in the CUE interface.

However, if you're using an iPhone, that linkup doesn't work quite as well. To get the full benefit of controlling Pandora using the CUE interface, I had to plug my iPhone into the vehicle via its USB port conveniently located in the center console. Once plugged in, I could see an abbreviated Pandora interface, with thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons and the album cover.

Even when it's plugged in, you can't skip to the next track in Pandora using an iPhone. The only way to do that is to tap the thumbs-down icon. It felt like a work in progress.

I talked with Cadillac technicians, and they showed me how to use Pandora wirelessly from an iPhone via Airplay. But that doesn't give you any control of Pandora from the CUE interface. And I was disappointed to see that on neither Android nor iPhone could you skip to the next track using the car's steering-wheel controls.

You can use those controls to change radio stations -- why not to skip songs on Pandora? This would eliminate the need to use the CUE's touchscreen while driving, which, as I mentioned, is often a hit-or-miss affair.

At first I was wishing I didn't need to plug my iPhone into the car's USB port to use Pandora. But after using it for a while, I realized that plugging the phone into the car is important when using Pandora. As I've learned from using GPS on my iPhone as I drive in my current car, functions like that are battery hogs. If you go on a long trip, you don't want to run your smartphone battery down as it accesses 3G, 4G or LTE data to feed Pandora Radio.

So yes, you'll want to plug your phone into your car, even if it's just to top off the charge. And here is a delightful feature that makes using a smartphone easier: Cadillac created a perfect little bay tucked into the center console for your smartphone. While your phone is plugged into the well-placed USB port, it's a joy to use it while it's plugged in. Check it out:

You can close the console and there's room for the cable to come out, so you can easily see your phone's screen while it's plugged in. But when you're using your phone for such linkages to a car's audio system, keep in mind, this is going to be guzzling cellular data like this Caddy guzzles gasoline, so you might need to upgrade your plan accordingly.

Beyond the smartphone-friendly gadgetry, there are remarkable features that hint at a future of self-driving cars. The Driver Awareness Package includes Lane Departure Warning, sensing whether you're staying in your lane or not.

If you stray too far outside your lane to the left, you feel a little buzzing on the left side of the seat, or on the right cheek if you're drifting a bit to the right. It's startling the first time that tingle happens, and amusing every time after that.

The lane detection doesn't work as well when the pavement is wet -- the XTS wasn't able to tell when I strayed from one lane to another when driving on rain-drenched streets. But on dry days, the system is smart enough to know if you've engaged your turn signal to change lanes, avoiding a false butt-nudge.

I love it when a car suggests to you ways to drive more safely. The XTS lets you know if there's another car lurking in your blind spot, or cross-traffic in the street into which you're about to back up. There are two even more-advanced features in the Driver Assist Package (a $2,395 option) that Cadillac rolled out but didn't include in this review car.

The Adaptive Cruise Control uses radar and cameras to help control acceleration or braking, keeping up with the vehicle in front of you. Also included in that package is Automatic Collision Preparation, which senses when an accident is about to happen, and slowly applies the brakes to lessen the impact.

Cadillacs have traditionally been a showcase for the latest car tech, and this XTS is no exception. There are some features in this car I think should be installed in every car on the road, because they can make driving safer and save lives. For instance, all cars should have that Lane Departure Warning that could wake up a driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The heads-up display is eminently useful -- it's a lot safer than lowering your eyes to look at a speedometer, navigation prompt or radio station.

Features that I found useful and wished I had in my car are keyless ignition, as well as the heated seat and steering wheel, favorites of those of us who live on the frozen tundra. And using iPhone apps is definitely welcome, especially if there were more from which to choose. But all of this gee-whiz tech is expensive, so it might be a few years before we see all these niceties as standard equipment in cars driven by the rest of us.

After testing the 2013 Cadillac XTS for a week, I can say that its brawny power, lovely and leathery interior and high-tech features have seduced me. Its sure grip with its all-wheel drive on icy roads, as well as its driver awareness technology certainly makes driving safer. Its awkward CUE interface could use some work, but the tech-minded can learn how to use it efficiently with a bit of study.

The best news is, the most advanced features in this Cadillac will be trickling down to ordinary cars soon. That will be good for everyone.

College Fund Raisers Predict a Return to Prerecession Levels of ...

Charitable donations to colleges and universities increased by 5.5 percent in 2012, fund raisers at higher-education institutions reported in a twice-yearly survey that was released on Monday by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, or CASE. The fund raisers predicted additional growth of 5.8 percent in 2013.

?The recession continues to recede,? said John Lippincott, president of CASE, who added that the survey signals a return to levels of giving equal to those of the 2007-8 academic year, when donations reached a record $31.6-billion. Gifts to higher education plunged after the global economic downturn but were back up to $30.3-billion in 2010-11.

?Anecdotally we are hearing from our members and from fund raisers of growing confidence among their donor community,? he said. ?The donors themselves are feeling better about their own personal financial circumstances and the overall economic environment, where in the past they were reluctant to make commitments.?

Mr. Lippincott cited a $350-million gift by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York to the Johns Hopkins University, announced on Sunday, as ?one more welcome reminder? of rising donor confidence.

According to CASE, some donors made large gifts in late 2012 because of proposals during the ?fiscal cliff? negotiations in Washington that would have reduced the value of the charitable-gift tax deduction. The deduction remains tied to a donor?s marginal tax rate, Mr. Lippincott said, which continues to be a boon for philanthropy in the United States.

He cautioned, however, that the short-term nature of the fiscal repairs leaves philanthropists nervous.

?If we see significant changes being discussed in the tax code in the coming months as part of future negotiations in Congress,? Mr. Lippincott said, ?it could cause some concern among the donors.?

Community colleges were the biggest gainers in higher education last year, reported the fund raisers, who reported a 7-percent increase for 2012 and predicted a 6.8-percent increase for 2013.

?A lot of what that reflects is that, as the community-college sector as a whole has invested more in their advancement operations, they?re actually seeing a payoff from it,? Mr. Lippincott said. ?We?re just delighted to see that because, roughly speaking, community colleges educate about 50 percent of undergraduates in this country, and they raise about 1 percent of the philanthropic support for higher education.?

The survey, conducted online in January among fund raisers at more than 2,100 institutions in the United States that are members of CASE, had a response rate of 11.7 percent.

Witch-hunting "Hansel & Gretel" wins box office

(Reuters) - A grown-up "Hansel & Gretel" grabbed the weekend box office title, pulling in $19 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales with its reinvention of the fairy tale characters as fierce bounty hunters.

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" knocked last weekend's winner, low-budget horror flick "Mama," into second place. "Mama" earned $12.8 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates, followed by "Silver Linings Playbook" with $10 million.

CIA drama "Zero Dark Thirty" came in fourth with $9.8 million.

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star in "Hansel & Gretel" as crossbow-wielding adult siblings who travel the world taking out evil witches. MGM and Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures produced the action comedy for about $50 million. Paramount had predicted opening weekend sales in the high-teens or low $20 million range.

Don Harris, Paramount's president of distribution, said the film performed well despite the very cold temperatures and snow that hit the eastern United States.

"We are pleased that we were on our number on a worldwide basis. It looks like we are on or exceeding our numbers but we did get dinged with the weather on Friday," he said in an interview.

"The impact of the weather was certainly more than I had predicted."

"Mama" features Jessica Chastain as a woman forced to take care of two orphaned nieces who have been living in the woods. The $15 million production has now earned $48.6 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters through two weekends.

Chastain also stars in "Zero Dark Thirty" in an Oscar-nominated role as a dogged CIA agent searching for al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. The best picture nominee, which has sparked debate over depictions of torture, has grossed $69.9 million since its release in late December.

"Silver Linings Playbook" stars Bradley Cooper as a former mental patient trying to rebuild his life with the help of a young widow played by Jennifer Lawrence. Total sales for "Silver Linings" reached $69.46 million. The movie, Cooper, Lawrence and co-star Robert De Niro are all nominated for Oscars.

New crime thriller "Parker" finished in fifth place, taking in $7 million at domestic theaters. The film is based on a series of novels by Donald E. Westlake and stars Jason Statham as a thief seeking revenge against a crew that double-crossed him. Jennifer Lopez plays a woman who helps with his mission.

"Movie 43," a film with an ensemble of Hollywood directors and stars, was in seventh place, according to Hollywood.com, very close behind "Django Unchained."

The film is a series of interconnected short movies following a washed-up producer as he pitches hilarious and insane story lines featuring some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, including Hugh Jackman, Seth MacFarlane, Kate Winslet and Dennis Quaid. Privately held Relativity Media produced the film for about $6 million.

"Mama" was distributed by Universal Studios, a division of Comcast Corp. Sony Corp's movie studio released "Zero Dark Thirty." "Parker" was released by independent studio FilmDistrict. The Weinstein Co distributed "Silver Linings Playbook."

Israel warns of attack on Syrian chemical weapons

(AP) ? Israel could launch a pre-emptive strike to stop Syria's chemical weapons from reaching Lebanon's Hezbollah or al-Qaida inspired groups, officials said Sunday,

The warning came as the military moved a rocket defense system to a main northern city, and Israel's premier warned of dangers from both Syria and Iran.

Israel has long expressed concerns that Syrian President Bashar Assad, clinging to power during a 22-month civil war, could lose control over his chemical weapons.

Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said Sunday that Israel's top security officials held a special meeting last week to discuss Syria's chemical weapons arsenal. The fact of the meeting, held the morning after a national election, had not been made public before.

Shalom told the Army Radio station that the transfer of weapons to violent groups, particularly the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah, would be a game changer.

"It would be crossing a line that would demand a different approach, including even action," he said. Asked whether this might mean a pre-emptive attack, he said: "We will have to make the decisions."

Israel has kept out of the civil war that has engulfed Syria and killed more than 60,000 people, but it is concerned that violence could spill over from its northern border into Israel.

Israel deployed its Iron Dome rocket defense system in the northern city of Haifa on Sunday. The city was battered by Hezbollah rocket fire during a war in the summer of 2006. The military called the deployment "routine."

Iron Dome, an Israel-developed system that shoots down incoming short-range rockets, was used to defend Israeli cities during a round of hostilities with Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, on Israel's southern flank, last November.

Yisrael Hasson, a lawmaker and former deputy head of Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency, said Israel was closely following developments in Syria to make sure chemical weapons don't "fall into the wrong hands."

"Syria has a massive amount of chemical weapons, and if they fall into hands even more extreme than Syria like Hezbollah or global jihad groups it would completely transform the map of threats," Hasson told Army Radio.

"Global jihad" is the term Israel uses for forces influenced by al-Qaida. Syria's rebels include al-Qaida-allied groups.

Syria has rarely acknowledged possessing chemical weapons.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to threats from Syria and Iran at a Cabinet meeting Sunday. Iran is Syria's main regional ally.

"We must look around us, at what is happening in Iran and its proxies and at what is happening in other areas, with the deadly weapons in Syria, which is increasingly coming apart," he said.

Israel views Iran as an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs and support for violent anti-Israeli groups in Lebanon and Gaza, as well as repeated references by Iranian leaders to Israel's destruction. Iran denies it is seeking to build atomic weapons, insisting its nuclear program is for civilian purposes.

On Friday, Israeli Channel 2 TV broadcast an interview with a former Iranian diplomat who defected to the West in 2010. He warned that if Tehran gets nuclear weapons, it would use them against Israel. He did not provide evidence.

Part of Mohammad Reza Heydari's job was to draft foreign scientists to work on Tehran's nuclear program and he brought many from North Korea into Iran, the report said.

Heydari spoke from Oslo, where he has received political asylum.

Expand Your Business With Online Marketing Tips | Internet ...

Depending on your drive and ambition, network marketing has the potential to be a thrilling new venture for you. The following information will give you some effective and smart ideas on how to run a network marketing business successfully.

As part of your marketing strategy for your business, you may want to create a public consumer relations page. You can include content with articles that could be used for magazines, newspapers and online. This is an easy and effective way to show your business to the public.

It is important to use social media in your Internet marketing plans. By creating and maintaining a Facebook page for your business, you encourage customers and fans to interact and spread the word about your products and services. Keep an ongoing dialogue going with your customers with Twitter.

It can be hard to decide how to keep your website going. Eliminate sites slowly until you are down to just one, which would be the one you go with. You should choose a website niche you enjoy that interests you as well. Creating a tangible goal will make it much easier to market your website.

Give your customers a reason to visit your website. Having a website that?s only one page or barely has information on it won?t really attract people. For instance, you can allow your customers to read various product reviews written by real customers, or articles explaining your business and your product. Your goal should be to inform people, not only to sell them on a product.

Do you want some sound advice about Internet marketing? It is important that your site?s landing page includes an objective that is identified by your site visitors. You should sell your niche on this page. When your viewer arrives on your landing page, they should know exactly what you are selling! If your user cannot find it right away, they are going to leave fast.

An important tip regarding Internet marketing is to try to adjust your content and delivery of content in a way so that your customers get the impression that they are completely in control. Nothing can turn people off faster than unwanted email. Make sure they know that participation is purely optional.

Create an informative website with a glossary of common terms. People searching for those terms will be drawn to your site. This will help both your customers and prospective customers. It will strengthen your reputation as others who are searching for these terms will be able to locate your site.

Customers will order their products faster if you give them incentives to do so. You can offer free gift wrapping, faster shipments or free shipping. You may want to offer free shipping to the first hundred people purchasing a new product. Consumers like incentives to purchase, and offering good ones will encourage people to purchase your goods or services.

Use these helpful tips with your business. They will help you build a stable foundation that you can use to expand in network marketing.

'Cool' kids in middle school bully more

Friday, January 25, 2013

Bullying, whether it's physical aggression or spreading rumors, boosts the social status and popularity of middle school students, according to a new UCLA psychology study that has implications for programs aimed at combatting school bullying. In addition, students already considered popular engage in these forms of bullying, the researchers found.

The psychologists studied 1,895 ethnically diverse students from 99 classes at 11 Los Angeles middle schools. They conducted surveys at three points: during the spring of seventh grade, the fall of eighth grade and the spring of eighth grade. Each time, students were asked to name the students who were considered the "coolest," the students who "start fights or push other kids around" and the ones who "spread nasty rumors about other kids."

Those students who were named the coolest at one time were largely named the most aggressive the next time, and those considered the most aggressive were significantly more likely to be named the coolest the next time. The results indicate that both physical aggression and spreading rumors are rewarded by middle school peers.

"The ones who are cool bully more, and the ones who bully more are seen as cool," said Jaana Juvonen, a UCLA professor of psychology and lead author of the study. "What was particularly interesting was that the form of aggression, whether highly visible and clearly confrontational or not, did not matter. Pushing or shoving and gossiping worked the same for boys and girls.

"The impetus for the study was to figure out whether aggression promotes social status, or whether those who are perceived as popular abuse their social power and prestige by putting other kids down," she said. "We found it works both ways for both 'male-typed' and 'female-typed' forms of aggression."

The research is published online in the prominent Journal of Youth and Adolescence and will be appear in an upcoming print edition of the journal.

The study implies that anti-bullying programs have to be sophisticated and subtle to succeed.

"A simple message, such as 'Bullying is not tolerated,' is not likely to be very effective," Juvonen said, when bullying often increases social status and respect.

Effective anti-bullying programs need to focus on the bystanders, who play a critical role and can either encourage or discourage bullying, said Juvonen, who has conducted research on bullying since the mid-1990s and serves as a consultant to schools on anti-bullying programs. Bystanders should be made aware of the consequences of spreading rumors and encouraging aggression and the damage bullying creates, she said.

Juvonen's current research is federally supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Juvonen and her colleagues reported in 2003 that bullies are popular and respected and are considered the "cool" kids.

The rumors middle school students spread often involve sexuality (saying a student is gay or sexually promiscuous) and family insults, she said.

Like middle school students, Juvonen noted, non-human primates also use aggression to promote social rank (although gossiping is obviously limited to humans).

Co-authors of the new study are former UCLA psychology graduate student Yueyan Wang and UCLA psychology doctoral student Guadalupe Espinoza.

In previous research, Juvonen and her colleagues have reported that nearly three in four teenagers say they were bullied online at least once during a recent 12-month period, and only one in 10 reported such cyber-bullying to parents or other adults; that nearly half of the sixth graders at two Los Angeles?area public schools said they were bullied by classmates during a five-day period; that middle school students who are bullied in school are likely to feel depressed, lonely and miserable, which in turn makes them more vulnerable to further bullying incidents; and that bullying is pervasive.

"Bullying is a problem that large numbers of kids confront on a daily basis at school; it's not just an issue for the few unfortunate ones," Juvonen has said. "Students reported feeling humiliated, anxious or disliking school on days when they reported incidents, which shows there is no such thing as 'harmless' name-calling or an 'innocent' punch.'"

Juvonen advises parents to talk with their children about bullying before it ever happens, to pay attention to changes in their children's behavior and to take their concerns seriously.

Students who get bullied often have headaches, colds and other physical illnesses, as well as psychological problems.

Catholic Hospital: Fetus not legally a person

DENVER (AP) ? Colorado's Catholic bishops will review a church hospital's legal argument that it should not be liable for the death of unborn twins because a fetus is not a person under state law.

The arguments were made in papers Englewood-based Catholic Health Initiatives filed in 2010 to persuade a judge to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit against St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City. They appeared to contradict the church's centuries-old stance that life begins at conception.

In a statement Thursday evening, the bishops said they would review the litigation to ensure it complied with church doctrine.

The lawsuit was filed after Lori Stodghill and the 7-month-old fetuses she was carrying died in the hospital's emergency room. Attorneys for her husband are urging the Colorado Supreme Court to take the case.
