Son Raises Money for Cancer Research after Father Dies of Pancreatic Cancer

They came to remember the life and fight of Les Van Zandt.

"He didn't go alone, you know we were there with him," said his son, Cole.?

Weeks after his father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Cole Van Zandt found a way to help his family with "Fight the Fight." Though Les died Christmas day, the family felt it was still important to go on with the event.

"Dad had talked about how fun it would've been, or it was going to be to go," said Cole.

Though the event was originally set up to help Cole and his family pay for the medical expenses, now he simply just wants to give back.

"We just felt like we could go ahead and go on with the fundraiser and donate all the proceeds to the American Cancer Society," he explained.

Not only is it what his dad would've wanted, Cole now wants to help other families fighting cancer.

"Any person that has a family member that may be suffering from cancer, now I know how that feels. You know, it feels good to be able to help somebody," Cole said.

And hoping to one day set up a fund in his father's memory to help find the cure to pancreatic cancer.

Mobile's Big Leap into Loyalty in 2013 | Kobie Marketing | The Muse ...

Very often technological innovations build off what follows and aren?t fully appreciated until after the fact. Sometimes they seem totally unrelated. Perhaps one day we?ll look back and say that mobile and the floodtide of consumer metrics gathered from these increasingly smart devices were loyalty programs? game-changer just as other technologies that have come before. Like SIM cards and smartphones, mobile and loyalty should be a partnership that endures.

Ditch the Daily Deal? Mobile Can do a Whole Lot More
As we close out the year, it?s become quite clear that, for loyalty program providers, mobile shouldn?t be an afterthought, but integral in successful consumer engagement and loyalty marketing strategies. And considering how technologies and marketing channels are merging, the degree to which data generation from these channels drives positive feedback is critical. The result is a customer rewards program ? tailored in real time to member wants and needs ? that improves with each engagement cycle.

Equally crucial are the findings from a November 2012 study, which shows that daily deals and discounts may not be all they?re cracked up to be when it comes to brand revenue and loyalty acquisition. According to Utpal Dholakia, a professor of management at Rice University Graduate School of Business, fewer than half, (48%) of business owners opt for a second daily deal attempt. Put another way, daily deal disappointment is yet more proof that consumers are looking for something more. Thankfully, mobile, with its tap-friendly and visually engaging environment, is able to deliver the loyalty experience and not just the daily deal goods.

Critical Mass has Passed
Adoption numbers alone should tell loyalty marketers and brands that mobile is where they need to be in 2013 ? ?if they?re not there already. More than one in four members prefers to access a given loyalty program via mobile whereas about half of the US adult population owns a smartphone. And, according to research by Banyan Branch and VIPdesk, nearly half (47%) of program providers have or are planning to develop a mobile app ? all in an effort to capture the predicted $18 billion that mobile commerce will net by 2014.

Get Smart About Your Smart Device
One of the most interesting recent developments within mobile as it relates to loyalty came in September 2012 with the launch of Apple?s iOS6 software and its newest app, Passbook. Designed as a one-stop-shop to organize users? virtual gift cards, coupons, passes, tickets and loyalty memberships without physical cards, the app?s growing list of brands suggests that companies recognize the fully digital, paperless and card-less world is fast approaching. Passbook has been gaining traction since its launch ? all the more reason for brands and consumers to remain loyal to its progress. On Christmas Eve, Mashable reported that Apple had filed a new patent for an upgrade to its popular app that may include NFC technology, the contactless radio frequency digital wallet payment option. While NFC excitement remains slim, if any company has a chance at turning an existing technology into a blockbuster, it?s Apple. So will 2013 be NFC-enabled? Certainly in greater measure than it is today.

The Golden Goose Lays its Golden Egg
Mobile and the consumer metrics gathered from devices including purchases made, types of purchases sought, channel preference, average purchase price point, location of purchase, demographics and loyalty rewards desires, really do suggest a ?golden goose? of technology has arrived in the form of the smartphone . Just think, it was only a few years ago that people thought of their mobile phones as nothing more than portable landlines ? albeit capable of storing a phonebook?s-worth of numbers. Today they?ve matured into mini-computers with mega-potential.

With millions of smartphone-toting Americans and millions more soon to jump on board, the loyalty-mobile partnership is just getting started. I can?t wait to see what new 2013 mobile loyalty initiatives evolve, how many more ?golden eggs? will be laid, and the degree to which channel convergence ? the topic of our fourth and final 2013 loyalty trends ?? will continue to connect the dots between mobile, Big Data and personalization. ?Stay tuned.

Landlords Exit Strategy - Readers CGT Question

Landlords Exit Strategy - Readers CGT Question

?Hello Mark, very impressed with your site, I have a question for you:

My wife and I have a small portfolio of property which has been built up over the years by keeping on our residences rather than selling to finance the new ones. None were purchased on Buy to let mortgages.

We own them jointly which I see from you articles may not be the best option but aside from this we are considering selling the properties that we let to clear the?loan on our principle home. The let properties have remnants of the original mortgages left to pay. Our principle property has been financed by a business loan.

As the money raised from the let properties is to be used to pay off the loan on the principle property will this money be first subject to CGT or can it be classed as transfer of equity for example within a business or such like.

Best regards Chris?

Critical Review

An article review of Yunfei? Chong ,2011.? ? The Research on how Chinese vocational education break through the current bottleneck of its development , Concurrent discussion on how to establish the mechanism of school enterprise cooperation in Chinese vocational education?. ????Zhengzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College

This article focuses on ?how to develop Chinese Vocational Education by establish the mechanism of school-enterprise cooperation . The authors have stressed the cooperation between schools and enterprises that appear to have a problem in creating a program of bilateral cooperation which respectively provide help to achieve a common goal or a win-win due to? the failure of the government to encourage partnerships between schools and enterprises.; government-lead ?. The author aims to highlight the collaboration between industry and academia like ?Dual System?? vocational education models in Germany that provide job internship ,one of the reason for difficulty of school-enterprises cooperation; administrative subordination;. Yunfei mentions that perhaps almost vocational colleges perfom actively, but it not accompany with enterprise or industry that did not contact the colleges forwardly.

This article is significant given that the difficulties of school-enterprise cooperation is lack of talent training as well as evaluated by educational expert. ?However as a result of somewhat abstract implications, the article would perhaps only be of interest on ?co-sponsorship mechanism and policy guarantee especially on government-lead.? The authors have used ?vocational education models to describe the government- lead in developing countries like ;Amerika, England, Germany and Japan; and to compare the efficient model of personnel training.Although showing differences in ??implementation but strives to achieve the common goal of providing provisions to ensure the training is going well. The author mention it provides good reference to strengthen the government ?lead, strengthen the legislation of vocational education, strengthen the overall plan and supervise, and establish the cooperation mechanism.

The author has started writing specifying keywords should be known and so began a discussion on the topic. The author have a very good in processing due to problems in school-enterprise Cooperation is more specific that can identify the cause of how the occurrence constraints to progress chinese vocational education. The topic has an objective to be achive. The author has made a claims that government-lead is the only way to break through the current bottleneck of vocational education development but ?an evidence was provided is not reliable. The conclusion also are drawn just a simple word and not complement. The principal of the text can be better organized

As a conclusion it can be said that the author has managed to transfer information on how to solve the bottleneck problem as experienced by chinese vocational education which should strengthen the school-enterprise cooperation.? To the success of this cooperation must be the government in terms of provision of assistance and reform The author seems to only look to the government-lead, although the schools are supposed to provide entrepreneurship education as recommended by Robert Kowasaki in her book, rich dad, poor dad where he suggested that education for entrepreneurship have since translated children from school. Similarly, vocational education should start at school with teachers who are trained as discussed by Qiu Feiyue and Lifang Le (2010). Quality education will produce a quality student . I am? agree with Malaysia system vocational school that was up grade to be a college and develop the teachers skill.

Home prices rose in October, survey shows

1 hr.

Single-family home prices rose in October for nine months in a row, reinforcing the view the domestic real estate market is improving and should bolster the economy in 2013, a closely watched survey showed on Wednesday.?

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, stronger than the 0.5 percent rise forecast by economists polled by Reuters.?

"Looking over this report, and considering other data on housing starts and sales, it is clear that the housing recovery is gathering strength," David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at Standard & Poor's, said in a statement.?

While record low mortgage rates and modest job growth should keep the housing recovery on track, analysts cautioned home prices face downward pressure from a likely pickup in the sales of foreclosed and distressed properties and reduced buying investors and speculators.?

Prices in the 20 cities rose 4.3 percent year over year, beating expectations for a rise of 4.0 percent.?

Las Vegas posted the biggest monthly rise on a seasonally adjusted basis at 2.4 percent, followed by a 1.7 percent increase in San Diego, the latest Case-Shiller data showed.?

"Higher year-over-year price gains plus strong performances in the Southwest and California, regions that suffered during the housing bust, confirm that housing is now contributing to the economy," Blitzer said.?

Housing contributed 10 percent to the overall U.S. economic growth in the third quarter, while the sector represented less than 3 percent of gross domestic product, he said.?

Last week, the government said U.S. GDP expanded at a stronger-than-expected 3.1 percent annualized pace in the third quarter.?

Excluding seasonal factors, however, home prices in 12 of the 20 cities fell in October from September as home values tend to decline in fall and winter, Blitzer said.?

Chicago experienced the largest non-seasonally adjusted decline at 1.5 percent, followed by a 1.4 percent fall in Boston.?

Cellular metabolism arms T cells to battle viruses and tumors

Dec. 24, 2012 ? New research demonstrates that the cellular metabolism of certain immune cells is closely linked to their function, which includes protecting against viral infections and the development of tumours.

Results recently published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine reveal the relationship between glucose metabolism in Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and their ability to acquire the tools necessary to migrate and kill virally infected cells or tumour cells. CTL are generated in response to particular cues, which promote the acquisition of a range of cytotoxic tools that are used to kill target cells and provide the ability to migrate to the locations in the body where they are required, i.e. sites of inflammation. While glucose has often been considered simply as a fuel source, this work reveals that the nature of glucose metabolism in CTL is closely linked to key CTL functions.

"It was previously thought that high levels of glucose metabolism simply served to provide CTL with energy and the raw materials to facilitate cell growth," explains Dr Finlay, "but it is now clear that in CTL glucose metabolism can dictate the function of these important immune cells."

Dr David Finlay of the School of Biochemistry and Immunology, Trinity College Dublin, working with Prof Doreen Cantrell's laboratory in the University of Dundee, has established that the activities of two proteins, mTORC1 and HIF1?, are essential to maintain CTL glucose metabolism and normal CTL function. Disruption of mTORC1 or HIF1? dramatically reduces glucose utilisation in CTL while also disrupting the levels of key molecules that are required for normal migration and target cell killing. This work affords new insight into the relationship between cellular metabolism and cellular function in immune cells.

Inappropriate activation of CTL contributes to the pathology associated with a range of autoimmune diseases including Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Dr Finlay and Prof Cantrell's work reveals the potential for novel therapeutic strategies to disrupt CTL migration and cytotoxic function for the treatment autoimmune conditions.

Deciding the Nature of Your eZine | Online success with SWELEX's ...

When choosing a topic to publish your eZine on, you must consider some important success factors that can determine the flow and goal of your eZine.

You are encouraged to write non-time sensitive contents such as short tips, mini stories and interviews. Doing so enables you to create content in advance so that you can conveniently dispense to your subscribers at a later schedule.

Topic-wise, you will do well to cater to a starving market that will always be on demand for the kind of content you offer. And by this, I mean that you should zero in onto a demand that has been, is and will always be there.

Relationships and dating are niches that have been on Earth long before the World Wide Web came up, for example. The food niche will always be there as long as there are chefs cooking for anyone with a stomach to fill.

Having said that, you also want to have a steady stream of products or services of your own or an affiliate for you can endorse to your mailing list and make even more money.

This is also the reason why the Internet Marketing niche will remain one of the hottest niches there is, as products and services are created almost around the clock. As long as there Internet Businesses cropping out, there will always be needs to be fulfilled.

First 2014 Chevrolet Corvette to be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson for ...

Something big is coming to the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, AZ. You can already read the (mostly) complete roster of vehicles that will be up for grabs at the annual event, and each item on the docket offers complete information as to year, make, model and a full description of the item.

But then there's lot No. 3016: Not a single bit of information is given, except that the vehicle is a Chevrolet, and that it's a "piece of Chevy history." All proceeds from this "special Chevrolet model" will be donated to the Center for Creative Studies, and the auction takes place at 8:30 PM on Saturday, January 19.

This wouldn't be the first big model to be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson event. Back in June, the first production 2013 SRT Viper was sold for $300,000, and General Motors has historically used the event to auction off and even debut special edition Corvette models. Given the fact that the Viper auction netted just over $200,000 more than the car's list price, a similar auction with the highly anticipated C7 Corvette could bring in some seriously big bucks.

We'll be seeing the 2014 Corvette for the first time on January 13 ? the night before the first press day of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, and the Barrett-Jackson auction takes place just six days later.

Wal-Mart : Probe continues in Mexico bribery case

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. says it continues an internal investigation into allegations that its Mexico subsidiary paid bribes to get stores built and will cooperate with any investigations by authorities.

The company is responding to a new report by The New York Times saying 19 store sites across Mexico were the target of Wal-Mart bribes. Among them is a store near Teotihuacan, the site of the famous pyramids outside Mexico City.

The Times says that Wal-Mart de Mexico paid more than $200,000 to circumvent zoning and other laws preserving archaeological sites to get the store built in 2004.

A Wal-Mart statement Tuesday says the Teotihuacan store is part of the company investigation that began about a year ago.

The Times first reported on allegations of Wal-Mart bribery last April.

Biological concrete for constructing 'living' building materials with lichens, mosses

Dec. 20, 2012 ? The Structural Technology Group has developed and patented a type of biological concrete that supports the natural, accelerated growth of pigmented organisms. The material, which has been designed for the fa?ades of buildings or other constructions in Mediterranean climates, offers environmental, thermal and aesthetic advantages over other similar construction solutions. The material improves thermal comfort in buildings and helps to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels.

In studying this concrete, the researchers at the Structural Technology Group of the Universitat Polit?cnica de Catalunya ? BarcelonaTech (UPC) have focused on two cement-based materials. The first of these is conventional carbonated concrete (based on Portland cement), with which they can obtain a material with a pH of around 8. The second material is manufactured with a magnesium phosphate cement (MPC), a hydraulic conglomerate that does not require any treatment to reduce its pH, since it is slightly acidic.

On account of its quick setting properties, magnesium phosphate cement has been used in the past as a repair material. It has also been employed as a biocement in the field of medicine and dentistry, indicating that it does not have an additional environmental impact.

The innovative feature of this new (vertical multilayer) concrete is that it acts as a natural biological support for the growth and development of certain biological organisms, to be specific, certain families of microalgae, fungi, lichens and mosses.

Having patented the idea, the team is investigating the best way to promote the accelerated growth of these types of organisms on the concrete. The goal of the research is to succeed in accelerating the natural colonisation process so that the surface acquires an attractive appearance in less than a year. A further aim is that the appearance of the fa?ades constructed with the new material should evolve over time, showing changes of colour according to the time of year and the predominant families of organisms. On these kinds of buildings, other types of vegetation are prevented from appearing, lest their roots damage construction elements.

Three layers of material

In order to obtain the biological concrete, besides the pH, other parameters that influence the bioreceptivity of the material have been modified, such as porosity and surface roughness. The result obtained is a multilayer element in the form of a panel which, in addition to a structural layer, consists of three other layers: the first of these is a waterproofing layer situated on top of the structural layer, protecting the latter from possible damage caused by water seeping through.

The next layer is the biological layer, which supports colonisation and allows water to accumulate inside it. It acts as an internal microstructure, aiding retention and expelling moisture; since it has the capacity to capture and store rainwater, this layer facilitates the development of biological organisms.

The final layer is a discontinuous coating layer with a reverse waterproofing function. This layer permits the entry of rainwater and prevents it from escaping; in this way, the outflow of water is redirected to where it is aimed to obtain biological growth.

CO2 reduction

The new material, which has various applications, offers environmental, thermal and aesthetic advantages, according to the research team led by Antonio Aguado and supported by Ignacio Segura and Sandra Manso. From an environmental perspective, the new concrete absorbs and therefore reduces atmospheric CO2, thanks to its biological coating.

At the same time, it has the capacity to capture solar radiation, making it possible to regulate thermal conductivity inside the buildings depending on the temperature reached. The biological concrete acts not only as an insulating material and a thermal regulator, but also as an ornamental alternative, since it can be used to decorate the fa?ade of buildings or the surface of constructions with different finishes and shades of colour; it has been designed for the colonisation of certain areas with a variety of colours, without the need to cover an entire surface. The idea is to create a patina in the form of a biological covering or a "living" painting.

There are also possibilities for its use in garden areas as a decorative element and as a sustainable means of blending buildings and constructions into the landscape.

Architectural renovation

The material lends itself to a new concept of vertical garden, not only for newly built constructions, but also for the renovation of existing buildings. Unlike the current vegetated fa?ade and vertical garden systems, the new material supports biological growth on its own surface; therefore, complex supporting structures are not required, and it is possible to choose the area of the fa?ade to which the biological growth is to be applied.

Vegetated fa?ades and vertical gardens depend on a plant substrate in some type of container, or they use cultures that are totally substrate-independent, such as hydroponic cultures. However, they require complex systems attached to the construction itself (layers of material) and even adjacent structures made of metal or plastic. This can lead to complications associated with additional loads, the reduction of light, or the reduction of space around the building. With the new "green" concrete, the organisms can grow directly on the multi-layered material.

Patent and commercialisation The research has led to a doctoral thesis, which Sandra Manso is writing. At present, the experimental campaign corresponding to the phase of biological growth is being conducted, and this will be completed at the UPC and the University of Ghent (Belgium). This research has received support from Antonio G?mez Bolea, a lecturer in the Faculty of Biology at the University of Barcelona, who has made contributions in the field of biological growth on construction materials.

At present, a patent is in the process of being obtained for this innovative product, and the Catalan company ESCOFET 1886 S.A., a manufacturer of concrete panels for architectural and urban furniture purposes, has already shown an interest in commercialising the material.

The Case Of The Made-Up BioWare Interview

The Case Of The Made-Up BioWare InterviewSometimes people tell lies on the Internet. That's no news if you've spent any time on a computer, where finding the truth is no simple task. Pranksters on the web make things up all the time.

But last week, we saw something rather uncommon even for the Internet's standards: an interview with BioWare that was made up entirely. And we've talked to the person behind it, who tells us that he expected to be caught.

***

On December 5, a website called GamerSyndrome published an interview that they said was with BioWare. Although there was no name attributed to the BioWare representative, none of the answers seemed strange or out of the ordinary. In other words, it seemed legit.

A week later, as sometimes happens with these things, the interview started to make its way around the gaming press. One particularly newsworthy piece of information?that the new Mass Effect wouldn't be out until 2014 or 2015?spread to a bunch of major websites: IGN, Eurogamer, GameSpot, and yes, even Kotaku.

Then, something rather unusual happened. BioWare's Mike Gamble tweeted that the whole thing was a lie. When I followed up with BioWare, they echoed Gamble's tweet:

"We were working with that outlet on an interview, but at no time did anyone from EA or BioWare provide any answers to questions from GamerSyndrome," a BioWare rep told me in an e-mail.

Strange and stranger. I reached out to GamerSyndrome's managing editor for comment, but he wouldn't say much more than what he had written on his website:

This interview has been removed and the author responsible for this post has been terminated from the gamersyndrome.com team. The information provided previously by the author of this post was deemed to be obtained from an inaccurate source and NOT an official Bioware or EA interview response. We apologize for the inconvenience and the matter is being dealt with severely.

Over the past few days, I've been in touch with the writer of the interview, a 25-year-old college student who agreed to speak with me under condition of anonymity. Although you can find his name on the byline of his interview, the writer would only speak to me if I agreed not to use it.

At first he said that he had been conned by someone claiming to have been from BioWare. He said that the conman had made up answers to all of his questions. He said there were e-mails on his GamerSyndrome account that could prove this, but he couldn't get to them, because he was no longer with GamerSyndrome.

For the past few days I've been trying to piece together and verify that story. Until today, when he sent me another e-mail.

"Look, it's not fair that I do this to you or to anyone," he said. "What I've told you isn't correct. Here's the actual truth.

"The entire article was fake, I didn't talk to anyone for it. No one had ever hired me to write for a gaming website before, so I was trying so hard to impress them. I wanted them to see the interview and be impressed by what I wrote. When BioWare didn't respond with the answers to my questions I decided to finish the post myself. I took quotes from past BioWare interviews and inserted them into my post, as well as quotes from The Art of Mass Effect and The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3. I didn't expect the article to go anywhere so I thought nothing of it. However, I'm sorry for the article. There's nothing right with what I did and I apologize to anyone who was misled by this article."

So why? What drives someone to make up an entire interview like that? What's the logic behind it?

"I had been talking the interview up among the writers on GamerSyndrome and they all seemed so impressed with the fact that I could get an interview with [BioWare]," the writer told me. "Plus the administrator of GamerSyndrome seemed super impressed by it [so] I felt I needed to get the article up. I had been promising the article for a few months and BioWare had yet to respond to the email containing our questions. I felt that I had to get the article up, otherwise no one would think it was something."

I asked him if he thought he'd be found out. "Truthfully, yes I did think I would get caught," he said. "I didn't do it with the intent of deceiving people or spreading around lies. I only did it because I wanted to get the article finished and move on from it."

He wanted to be a games reporter. He just wanted to get the big scoop, impress his friends and peers at GamerSyndrome and elsewhere. But now he thinks he's sabotaged his dream.

"I don't plan on ever writing for a website again because of this situation," he said. "It was not fair for me to do this and all I can do now is say I'm sorry."

Write For Your Peeps | Writing and Publishing News

We talked about developing a good marketing plan for 2013. Today, we?ll talk about creating a successful book.

Some of you are in the writing process and aren?t thinking about promotion. You should be. But you probably aren?t. You are too focused on writing, finding time to write and worrying about what you?ll do once you are finished?how you?ll go about getting it published.

While you are enjoying the process of writing, you really should step outside of yourself and consider your audience?your readers. A book, in order to be successful, needs readers. Sure, as we discussed yesterday, marketing is a way to let people know about your book. But when they learn about your book, it had better be something they want to read?a book that is appealing to them. The thing is, you may have to promote to a whole lot of people in order to make even a minimal number of sales.

Unless you are known, the only people who will look forward to reading your book are your close family and friends, perhaps those who are curious about what you might write and those who are definitely interested in your topic/genre. Are there people interested in reading about your topic or books in your genre? Are you writing a book that is wanted/needed? This is the place where most successful authors start. They recognize a need or a trend and they follow it with gusto.

Those authors who end up failing, are generally those who wrote a book for themselves?something they wanted to write.

If you hope to produce a successful book, consider your readers throughout. While you?re writing it, make sure that readers can follow the story, that you aren?t making it too complicated, that your sentences and the concept is clear and well-organized. Use words that the reader can flow through rather than get stuck on. Some writers like to use obscure words to impress. Most casual readers are not impressed by obscure words and foreign phrases. They are irritated by them.

Readers don?t like to have authors talk down to them, either. They like a reading challenge as long as they are reasonable.

There are many types of books and writing styles. Before you write your book, if you hope to sell more than a handful of copies, it is wise to make sure you have an audience. And then spend the next several months writing specifically for that audience. Make sure you are speaking their language, educating them or informing them in areas of their interest, filling a void and, if warranted, touching their core.

Legal Pot Complicates Drug-Free Work Policies ? CBS Denver

DENVER (AP) ? Pot may be legal, but workers may want to check with their boss first before they grab the pipe or joint during off hours.

Businesses in Washington state, where the drug is legal, and Colorado, where it will be by January, are trying to figure out how to deal with employees who use it on their own time and then fail a drug test.

It is another uncertainty that has come with pot legalization as many ask how the laws will affect them.

?There?s just an incredible amount of gray right now? about how marijuana legalization affects employers, said Sandra Hagen Solin of the Northern Colorado Legislative Alliance, a coalition of chambers of commerce.

Police departments are especially worried. Officers take oaths to protect all laws, state and federal. In this case, pot is still prohibited under federal law.

The Seattle police department is reviewing its policies on drug use by officers or prospective officers, spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said, adding that it?s unlikely off-duty officers will be allowed to use pot. The department might ease its requirement that applicants not have used marijuana in the previous three years.

The Denver police department is reviewing Colorado?s marijuana law, which goes into effect in January. The department has no immediate plans to change employment practices, spokesman John White said.

?Marijuana is still illegal at the federal level, so officers would not under any scenario be allowed to use marijuana,? White said. White wasn?t sure about pre-employment marijuana use.

Other employers, especially those with federal contracts, are concerned what the new laws mean for them. One group of Colorado businesses has pleaded for clarity in a letter to the White House, which hasn?t said if it would sue to block the law.

?The uncertainly created will cause havoc for our members and hamper their efforts to maintain drug-free worksites,? wrote Mark Latimer, head of the Rocky Mountain chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors.

The havoc Latimer refers to is confusion over a law passed with cigarette smokers in mind. Colorado?s Lawful Off-Duty Activities law says workers can?t be dismissed for legal behavior off the clock. A case pending in a state appeals court could settle the question.

The case involves Brandon Coats, a telephone operator for Dish Network. Paralyzed in a teenage car crash, he?s also been a medical marijuana patient in Colorado since 2009. Coats was fired in 2010 for failing a company drug test, though his employer didn?t claim he was ever impaired on the job.

Coats sued to get his job back, but a trial court dismissed his claim in 2011. The judge agreed with Dish Network that medical marijuana use isn?t a ?lawful activity? covered by the law. Coats appealed, and the state Court of Appeals has agreed to hear the case but hasn?t set a date.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, more than half the states have laws that protect workers who smoke cigarettes off the clock. Colorado?s law extends to all legal activities, though Washington state doesn?t have a similar statute.

?If you?re doing it at home and it?s not illegal and it?s not impairing your work performance, you should be protected,? said Coats? lawyer, Michael Evans.

Some employers are required by law to conduct drug testing, including in industries regulated by the U.S. Departments of Transportation, Energy and Defense. In other cases, companies or agencies that receive federal grants or contracts, including universities that get money from the Department of Education and police agencies that obtain grants from the Department of Justice, are required to maintain drug-free workplaces.

One of Washington?s biggest private employers, The Boeing Co., generally requires drug tests before employment, upon reasonable suspicion or after accidents. The Washington measure won?t change any of that, said company spokeswoman Cathy Rudolph. ?The safety and integrity of our operations, products and services is paramount,? she said in an email.

For companies like Boeing without random or regular drug testing, it?s not entirely clear how such policies can be enforced.

Some lawyers are encouraging companies to take stock of their drug policies. ?This is a good time for employers to revisit their policies and make sure they?re still consistent with what they want to do, and to talk with their employees about what the policies are,? said Mark Berry, an employment lawyer.

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, a Denver-based chain with locations in the two states, has no plans to revisit its drug policy. Spokesman Kevin Caulfield said the policy already covers legal drugs, such as prescription medication. Marijuana would be treated the same, he said.

?If a drug is legal, as long as it?s not abused or misused, it would not be something covered by the policy,? Caulfield said.

MintLife Blog | Personal Finance News & Advice | Is the Condo ...

    condos

If you purchased a condominium before the real estate crash, you may be wondering if you?ll ever be able to break even on it.

While that day has not yet arrived for everyone, the condo market is improving in many places. And in some areas, condo prices are almost back to pre-crash levels.

Median Sales Prices Up in Metropolitan Areas

Nationwide, the median sales price of existing apartment condo-coop homes in metropolitan areas was $181,000 in the three-month period ending September 2012, according to the National Association of Realtors.

That?s an increase of 7.7 percent over median prices in the quarter ending a year earlier (September 2011), according to the real estate organization.

The improvement varied by region and by metropolitan area, with 33 areas showing year-ago increases, while 21 areas showed declines.

The strongest improvement by far was in the West, where the median price of $209,100 was up 26 percent from the previous year.

In the South, prices were also up, rising 16 percent to $129,500, while the Northeast crept up 1.1 percent to $250,700. The Midwest declined slightly, 0.5 percent, to $132,100.

    Individual Markets Vary

Individual markets varied even more. In Atlanta, the median sale price of $74,000 was up a rollicking 77.9 percent one year, leading the nation.

At the other end of the scale, median sale prices in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk metro area in Connecticut slumped 59.8 percent to $90,000 from third-quarter 2011 to third-quarter 2012.

Prices are still far below their peaks, however. The S&P/Case-Shiller Index, which tracks condo markets in New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, found prices in July in nearly all those areas continued a string of monthly increases going back five months.

The company?s report noted that prices were still only at mid-2005 levels in the New York area, but the Big Apple region suffered relatively little during the crash, so prices there today are less than 10 percent below the 2006 peak.

In Chicago, the picture is grimmer, with prices only back to where they were in mid-2000, more than 12 years ago, and still down by a third from the 2007 peak, the company said.

    Factors Driving the Price Increase

Several factors are driving the price increase.

The general condo demand is rising while supplies are tight. Fewer foreclosures are coming onto the market, and existing owners are waiting for prices to rise further before putting their units up for sale.

Builders are beginning to ramp up construction, but are being slowed by financing issues.

Buyers also continue to face difficulty in obtaining mortgages for purchase money.?The financing problem is attributed to tight underwriting standards rather than high interest rates.

In fact, the NAR said rates on 30-year conventional fixed-rate mortgages averaged a record low of 3.54 percent in the quarter ending September 2012. That was down from 3.8 percent in the previous quarter and 4.31 percent during the same period in 2011.

The Future of the Condo Market

The condo market?s future looks better than it has in some time, according to those who build them.

The National Association of Homebuilders quarterly Multifamily Production Index, which measures how confident builders and developers are about the market, hit its highest reading since 2005 in the second quarter of 2012, ending in June.

After improving for eight consecutive quarters, builder confidence clearly has momentum, and it may take a while to run out.

The NAHB notes that the industry is constructing about 200,000 new multi-family units a year. That?s up quite a bit from the historic lows of about 110,000 in 2009 and 2010.

But before the crash, about 300,000 new multifamily units were being built every year for 12 straight years.

So, if you?re wondering whether the condo market is making a comeback, the answer is that it has already made a significant comeback, but it?s still got a long way to go if it?s going to get back to where it was.

Fla. GOP to ex Gov. Crist: Bring it on

    TALLAHASSEE, Fla -
Florida Republican Party leaders have a message for former Gov. Charlie Crist: Bring it on.

The state GOP was holding a quarterly meeting Saturday when news spread about Crist finally becoming a Democrat after more than two years as an independent. Crist left the Republican Party during his 2010 Senate run.

The conversion from Republican to Democrat was widely expected as Crist has become increasingly cozy with Democrats, including appearing with President Barack Obama during his re-election campaign.

Most anticipate Crist will now seek the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Gov. Rick Scott in 2014. If so, party leaders say there will be that much more motivation to re-elect Scott.

?? Scott refused to discuss Crist after speaking to party leaders Saturday, saying he's focused on doing his job.
